What is this black cylinder in my engine bay?

hey, i have a holden commodore VS, and below my top radiator hose & power steering fluid, next to the battery there is a black cylinder which has 3 hoses connecting to it on my mates car but on my car 1 is loose, 1 is GONE and 1 is on :D. what is this black cylinder? help would be loved :)
