What single rifle would you recommend for self-defense AND hunting?

I already have a pistol, but I need something that has some good stopping power for longer range self defense application, as well as something to hunt with if the need arose. It's really all about emergency preparedness. I've been looking at the Colt M4, but have heard some stories about the NATO cartridge giving a questionable performance. I like the large capacity, though. Any help?
