How to de-tangle major matted hair?

My cousin fell into a depression and really let herself go, including her hair. Now that shes doing better she is stuck with the problem of severly matted hair, I was wondering if anyone knew of any detangler that was especially good that se could try, any helpful advice would be appreciated. Thanks
